Truth
Many a doctrine is like a window pane. We see truth through it but it divides us from truth.
- Khalil Gibran
Believe nothing because it is written in books. Believe nothing because wise men say it is so. Believe nothing because it is religious doctrine. Believe it only because you yourself know it to be true.
- Buddha [Siddharta Gautama]
Every truth passes through three stages before it is recognized. In the first, it is ridiculed. In the second, it is opposed. In the third, it is regarded as self-evident.
- Arthur Schopenhauer
It is natural for man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts…. For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.
- Patrick Henry
All opposing truths are unified in the Truth which is One.
- Jili
If fifty million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.
- Anatole France
Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened.
- Winston Churchill
The first and last thing which is required of genius is the love of truth.
- Goethe
There are four chief obstacles in grasping truth ... namely, submission to faulty and unworthy authority, influence of custom, popular prejudice, and the concealment of our own ignorance accompanied by an ostentatious display of our knowledge.
- Roger Bacon
